What to do and who to call

Claims phone numbers by insurer

Keys to getting paid

  1. Report it right away and write down the report number.
  2. Tell the truth and stick to the facts. If the insurer proves you hid or changed facts to deceive it, it no longer has to pay.
  3. Do not admit fault or sign agreements without the insurer.
  4. Document everything with photos, video and witnesses.
  5. Keep the damage from getting worse: the law requires it and the insurer pays those reasonable costs.
  6. Hand in complete documents and ask for a receipt: the 30 days to pay you start when the insurer has them.
  7. Ask for any denial in writing and call us before accepting a lower payment.

How to complain to the UNE and CONDUSEF

What to do, by type of insurance

Steps, documents and deadlines for each type of policy. Your policy and its general conditions always prevail; if something is different in your case, we will tell you.

Car, motorcycle, truck or fleetCollision, theft, damage or injuries involving your vehicle.

Right away

  1. If anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
  2. Report it to your insurer's claims line from the scene; the number is on your policy or in the insurer's app. Write down the report number.
  3. Wait for the adjuster. Do not move the vehicles unless it is dangerous or the authorities ask you to.
  4. Take photos of the damage, the license plates, the scene and the other driver's license and policy.
  5. If your vehicle is stolen, file a report with the State Prosecutor's Office (Fiscalía) and notify your insurer immediately.

If this happens

You hit a pedestrian

Stop and stay at the scene: leaving makes your legal situation worse and can leave you without coverage. Call 911 for an ambulance; do not move the person unless they are in immediate danger. Report it to your insurer, ask for your policy's lawyer and do not make a statement to the authorities without them.

You are detained or your vehicle is impounded

Ask to speak with your insurer's lawyer and let us know. If your policy includes legal assistance, the insurer handles your defense and, when applicable, arranges the bond for your release and the release of the vehicle.

Someone hit you and drove off

Write down the plates, color, model and which way they went; look for witnesses and cameras. Report it to your insurer and file a report with the public prosecutor. With collision (daños materiales) coverage they repair your car, usually with your deductible; with liability only, your own damage is not covered.

The at-fault driver has no insurance

Report it anyway. With collision coverage your insurer repairs your car and can then recover from the at-fault driver; with liability only, you will have to claim from them directly or in court.

It was your fault

Your liability coverage pays third-party damage and injuries up to the sum insured; your own damage depends on having collision coverage. Let the adjuster negotiate with the other party.

Someone is seriously injured or killed

Call 911, do not leave and immediately ask for your insurer's lawyer. Medical expenses for occupants and third parties are covered according to your coverages.

Your vehicle was stolen

Do not resist. Get to safety, call 911, file a report with the Fiscalía and report it to the insurer to start the search. Theft of parts or of belongings inside the car usually needs separate coverage.

Your car flooded or a tree fell on it

If it flooded, do not try to start it: engine damage from starting it may not be covered. Report it and ask for your policy's tow truck.

You will drive in the United States

Most Mexican policies do not cover you there. Check whether yours has a US extension; if not, buy US insurance before you cross.

What to say

  • The facts as they happened: place, time, which way you were going and what you saw.
  • That you are insured and your insurer's report number.
  • If you don't know something, such as speed or distance, say you don't know.

What not to say

  • “It was my fault” or “I'll pay”: fault is decided by the adjuster and the authorities.
  • Guesses or details you are not sure of.
  • Never invent or exaggerate damage: if the insurer proves deceit, it can refuse to pay the whole claim.

Notifying the insurer

Report it on the spot: the insurer needs to send an adjuster and, after a theft, start searching for the vehicle. By law you have at most five days to give written notice unless the policy sets another term, and late notice can reduce your payment.

Documents usually requested

  • Current policy and proof of payment
  • Valid driver's license and official ID
  • Vehicle registration card (tarjeta de circulación)
  • Total loss or theft: original invoice endorsed to the insurer, proof of vehicle tax payments, plate cancellation, keys and the report filed with the public prosecutor
  • Bank statement with CLABE in the insured's name for the payment

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

The adjuster decides the route: a repair order at a body shop or dealer, payment for damages, medical referral for the injured and, for total loss or theft, compensation based on the value set in your policy (commercial, invoice or agreed value) minus the deductible.

Watch out for

  • Do not sign agreements or acknowledge debts without the insurer: they are not binding on it.
  • Read the adjuster's statement before signing it and ask for a copy.
  • Driving without a valid license or under the influence is usually excluded; check your policy.
Major medical and healthHospital stay, surgery, illness or accident.

Right away

  1. In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital in your insurer's network and show your card or policy number.
  2. Let us and the insurer know when you are admitted so direct billing can be requested, if your plan allows it.
  3. For scheduled surgery or treatment, request authorization before the date: your doctor fills in the medical report and the insurer answers the request.

If this happens

Emergency at an out-of-network hospital

Get treated wherever you need to be stabilized, notify the insurer as soon as you can and ask to be moved to an in-network hospital. What you pay is claimed as a reimbursement; a higher coinsurance may apply.

The hospital asks for a deposit

This is common while the insurer authorizes direct payment. Ask for the authorization letter and keep the receipt so it is applied or refunded.

Your scheduled surgery is denied

Ask in writing for the reason and the clause applied. If the denial is not justified, file a complaint with the UNE and CONDUSEF; we will help.

Emergency abroad

If you can, call your policy's international assistance first. It is covered only if your plan includes international coverage or emergencies abroad.

Someone else injured you

Your medical insurance treats you anyway; the law lets the insurer recover the cost from the person responsible afterwards.

What to say

  • Your symptoms and medical history exactly, to the doctor too: what you declared when you bought the policy must match your records.
  • The real dates of your first symptoms and diagnoses.

What not to say

  • Do not change dates or hide conditions: it is grounds for denial and for cancelling the policy.
  • Do not ask the doctor to change the report; an incomplete report only delays payment.

Notifying the insurer

Give written notice of the accident or illness on your insurer's form. By law the limit is five days unless the policy sets another term.

Documents usually requested

  • Signed accident or illness notice (or claim form)
  • Medical report from the treating doctor
  • Tests and results confirming the diagnosis
  • For reimbursement: invoices (CFDI) in the name of the insured or policyholder, prescriptions and proof of payment
  • Official ID and bank statement with CLABE

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

With direct billing, the insurer pays the network hospital and doctors and you cover the deductible, coinsurance and anything not covered. With reimbursement, you pay and the insurer refunds what applies. Payment is due 30 days after the insurer receives all the documents.

Watch out for

  • Check waiting periods and pre-existing conditions before scheduling.
  • Using hospitals outside the tier you bought can raise your coinsurance.
  • Keep the originals of invoices, prescriptions and tests. We review your file before you send it.

Medical expense claims

Personal and school accidentInjuries, loss of limbs or senses, or accidental death.

Right away

  1. Get medical care right away and keep the emergency room report.
  2. If the accident happened on the street or involved others, ask for the public prosecutor's case number.
  3. For school insurance, ask the school for the policy number and the accident report.

If this happens

The accident happened at work

Besides your policy, if you are enrolled in IMSS its occupational risk insurance covers you; tell your employer the same day.

A student was hurt at school

The school reports it to the insurer and gives you the medical referral or form; go to the network provider indicated and keep the receipts.

Accidental death in a crash or violent event

Beneficiaries will need the complete public prosecutor file and the autopsy report; request them from the start.

What to say

  • How, where and when the accident happened, and who saw it.

What not to say

  • Do not anticipate diagnoses or causes: let the medical report establish them.

Notifying the insurer

Notify the insurer in writing as soon as you can; by law the limit is five days unless the policy sets another term.

Documents usually requested

  • The insurer's claim form
  • Medical report and tests
  • Medical bills, if your policy reimburses them
  • For loss of limbs or accidental death: public prosecutor's records, expert reports and the death certificate, as applicable

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

Reimbursement of medical expenses up to the sum insured, or a payment based on your policy's schedule of benefits for loss of limbs or accidental death.

Watch out for

  • Each loss has a percentage in the schedule of benefits in your general conditions; check it before you claim.

Medical expense claims

Life, savings, retirement and funeralDeath, disability or maturity of a plan.

Right away

  1. Find the policy or certificate. If you don't know whether there was a policy, search CONDUSEF's SIAB-Vida.
  2. Beneficiaries notify the insurer and ask for its death claim form.
  3. For funeral insurance, call the policy's service line first.

If this happens

You don't know whether the person had insurance

Search CONDUSEF's SIAB-Vida and ask their employer (group insurance) and their banks (insurance tied to loans or cards).

The named beneficiary has already died

If no other beneficiary remains, the payment goes to the insured's estate; a probate proceeding or a notary procedure may be needed.

Death abroad

You will need the death certificate apostilled or legalized and translated. Check whether the policy or an assistance plan covers repatriation.

The insured became disabled

Request the medical assessment the policy requires. Depending on the plan, the sum insured is paid or premiums are waived.

The insurer says an illness was concealed

Ask for the answer in writing with its evidence. If the insured had a medical exam when buying the policy, the insurer cannot claim a pre-existing condition for what that exam assessed. File a complaint with the UNE and CONDUSEF.

What to say

  • The insured's exact details and the cause of death stated on the certificate.

What not to say

  • Do not withhold medical information the insurer requests: omissions delay payment or can void it.

Notifying the insurer

Notify the insurer as soon as you can. The right to claim the death benefit of a life policy expires after five years; in all other cases, after two.

Documents usually requested

  • Certified death record and medical death certificate
  • Birth certificate of the insured
  • Official ID, CURP and proof of address of each beneficiary
  • Claim form and medical report requested by the insurer
  • For accidental or violent death: the complete public prosecutor's records

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

The insurer pays the sum insured to the named beneficiaries; if there is none, it goes to the insured's estate. A guardian is usually required for minors. In savings or retirement plans, the value set in the policy is paid at maturity or surrender.

Watch out for

  • Keep your beneficiaries up to date, in writing, with the insurer.
  • If you want to name minors as beneficiaries, ask us how to appoint a guardian or set up a trust.

Claiming life insurance

Home, condominium and hurricaneFire, hurricane, flood, theft or damage to your home and belongings.

Right away

  1. Get your family to safety and call 911 or Civil Protection if needed.
  2. Stop the damage from spreading: cover windows, shut off water or power if it is safe. The law requires it and the insurer covers those reasonable costs.
  3. Take photos and video before cleaning or repairing, and keep damaged items until the adjuster sees them.
  4. After a burglary, file a report with the public prosecutor.

If this happens

A hurricane is coming

Before: take photos and video of your home and belongings, keep your policies in the cloud and protect windows. After: do not go in if the structure is damaged, report early and keep receipts for emergency expenses.

Your home is uninhabitable

Check whether your policy covers temporary lodging or rent and keep the receipts.

Your home was burglarized

Do not touch anything until the police arrive, file a report with the public prosecutor and list what was stolen with proof of purchase.

A leak damaged your neighbor's home

Shut off the water. Your family liability coverage can pay for the neighbor's damage; do not promise to pay before reporting.

You rent your home

As a tenant you insure your contents and your liability; the landlord insures the building.

What to say

  • What happened, when, and which belongings were damaged, with their approximate age.

What not to say

  • Do not include undamaged items or inflate values: it can void the entire claim.

Notifying the insurer

Report it to the insurer as soon as it happens and confirm in writing; by law the limit is five days unless the policy sets another term. After a hurricane there are many claims: report early.

Documents usually requested

  • Policy and proof of payment
  • Photos and video of the damage
  • List of damaged or stolen items with invoices, photos or other proof of ownership
  • Repair estimates
  • For theft, the report filed with the public prosecutor

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

The insurer repairs, replaces or pays for what is covered up to the sum insured, minus the deductible and, for hurricane, flood or earthquake, the coinsurance set in the policy. If you insured for less than the real value, unless agreed otherwise you are paid proportionally.

Watch out for

  • Do not make permanent repairs without the adjuster's approval.
  • Check every year that the sum insured is enough to rebuild your home and replace your belongings.
Business, SME, machinery and constructionFire, theft, natural hazards, machinery breakdown or damage on site.

Right away

  1. Protect people and call emergency services and Civil Protection.
  2. Take steps so the damage does not grow and document everything with photos and video.
  3. Keep damaged parts, equipment and goods for inspection; do not change the scene except for safety.

If this happens

Armed robbery or holdup

Get staff to safety, do not resist, call 911 and keep the security camera footage. File a report and notify the insurer.

An employee caused the loss

It is covered only if you have a fidelity or crime policy. File a report and keep the evidence unaltered.

The business had to stop operating

If you have business interruption coverage, record lost sales and extra expenses from day one.

A worker was injured

Get them care and notify IMSS. If you have employer's liability or group accident coverage, report it to the insurer too.

Cyberattack or ransomware

Disconnect affected equipment and do not pay ransoms without talking to your insurer; if you have a cyber policy, call its incident response line.

What to say

  • Facts and figures you can back up with documents.

What not to say

  • Don't give rough guesses: if you don't know the amount of the loss yet, tell the adjuster you will prove it with invoices and inventories.
  • Don't promise your buyers or suppliers that the insurance will pay them: wait for the insurer's answer in writing.

Notifying the insurer

Report it as soon as it happens and confirm in writing (five days at most unless the policy sets another term). For large losses the insurer assigns an adjuster and may appoint experts.

Documents usually requested

  • Policy and proof of payment
  • Written claim with an estimate of the loss
  • Invoices, inventories, accounting records and repair estimates
  • For theft, the report filed with the public prosecutor; for fire, the fire department's report if there is one
  • For loss of profits: financial statements and sales for the period

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

Repair, replacement or payment according to the policy, minus deductibles and coinsurance. For large losses, advance payments can be agreed while the loss is adjusted.

Watch out for

  • Keep a record of extra expenses to keep operating: some policies cover them.
  • Do not throw away debris or do a full clean-up without the adjuster's agreement.
General and professional liabilityWhen someone claims for damage caused by you, your company or your professional work.

Right away

  1. Help the injured person and call emergency services if needed.
  2. Notify your insurer as soon as you receive a claim or a lawsuit.
  3. Keep evidence: photos, witnesses, contracts, logs or files.

If this happens

A customer was injured at your business

Help them, call emergency services if needed, document the scene and report it to your insurer. Do not promise to pay expenses.

You are sued over your professional work

Notify the insurer immediately: many professional liability policies only cover claims made while the policy is in force.

Your pet bit someone

Help the person and report it; family liability coverage may cover it.

What to say

  • The facts, without judging them.

What not to say

  • “It was my fault”, “I'll pay” or promises of compensation: leave the negotiation to the insurer.

Notifying the insurer

The law requires notice as soon as compensation is demanded from you and, if there is a lawsuit, giving the insurer the information and evidence for your defense.

Documents usually requested

  • The claimant's demand: letter, email or lawsuit
  • Description of the facts, photos, witnesses and expert reports
  • Related contracts, logs or files

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

The insurer pays the injured third party what is due up to the sum insured; the law treats that person as the beneficiary of the policy from the moment of the loss. Defense costs are covered according to your policy.

Watch out for

  • Do not acknowledge debts or sign settlements without the insurer: they are not binding on it.
  • Admitting that something happened is not admitting fault; the law tells them apart.
CargoDamage, shortage or theft of goods in transit.

Right away

  1. Inspect the cargo on arrival. If there is damage or a shortage, note it on the waybill or bill of lading before signing.
  2. Take photos of the packaging, the vehicle and the goods, and keep everything.
  3. File a written claim with the carrier and notify your insurer.
  4. After a theft, file a report with the public prosecutor.

If this happens

The truck was stolen with the cargo

Call 911, file a report and notify both the vehicle insurer and the cargo insurer.

Rollover or highway accident

Ask for an adjuster to recover the cargo and for help from the authorities to prevent looting.

The goods arrived wet or damaged

Note the damage on the waybill before signing, take photos and keep the packaging and goods for inspection.

What to say

  • The actual condition in which you received the cargo.

What not to say

  • Do not sign as received in good condition or change the notes on the waybill.

Notifying the insurer

Report it immediately: cargo policies usually set short deadlines for notice and for claiming against the carrier.

Documents usually requested

  • Policy or shipment certificate
  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Waybill or bill of lading with the damage noted
  • Claim to the carrier and its reply
  • Police report, in case of theft

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

Compensation for the insured value of the damaged or lost goods, minus the deductible.

Watch out for

  • Do not sign for the cargo as received “in good condition” without inspecting it.
Travel and assistanceIllness, accident, luggage or cancellation during a trip.

Right away

  1. Before paying anything, call the assistance center shown on your certificate; they will send you to a doctor or hospital in their network.
  2. If the emergency kept you from calling, call as soon as you can.
  3. Keep receipts, medical reports, boarding passes and airline reports.

If this happens

You are hospitalized abroad

If you can, call the assistance line before admission; they guarantee payment to network hospitals.

You lost your passport

Report it to the local police and your consulate; many assistance plans help with the paperwork.

The airline lost your luggage

File the report at the airport before leaving and keep receipts for essential purchases.

What to say

  • Your symptoms and medical history exactly.

What not to say

  • Do not hide previous illnesses: many travel policies exclude pre-existing conditions and review medical records.

Notifying the insurer

Notify the assistance center at the time. For reimbursements, check your certificate for the deadline to submit documents.

Documents usually requested

  • Travel certificate or policy and passport
  • Medical report and original receipts
  • Luggage: the airline's property irregularity report and boarding pass
  • Cancellation or delay: proof of the reason and of the expenses

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

Direct payment to providers in the assistance network or later reimbursement, according to your policy.

Watch out for

  • Getting treatment without notifying the assistance center can reduce or void the reimbursement.
Surety bondsWhen the principal fails to meet the guaranteed obligation.

Right away

  1. If you are the beneficiary, file a written claim with the surety company with documents proving the obligation and the default.
  2. Do it within the term set in the bond or, if there is none, within 180 days after the bond expires or the obligation becomes due.
  3. If you are the principal, tell us as soon as you receive a demand: we try to resolve it before the bond is paid, because the surety company will recover from you whatever it pays.

If this happens

You are asked to pay as the bonded party

Tell us the same day. We gather proof of compliance and seek an agreement with the beneficiary before the surety company pays.

You are the beneficiary and the contractor abandoned the work

Draw up a record with photos and witnesses, demand compliance from the contractor in writing and claim the bond within the deadline.

What to say

  • The exact amount of the breach and how you calculated it.

What not to say

  • Do not claim more than you can prove: the surety company may pay only what it acknowledges, and you can claim the difference.

Notifying the insurer

The surety company may ask for information within the first 15 days and you have 15 days to provide it. Once the claim is complete, it has up to 30 days to pay or explain in writing why it does not apply.

Documents usually requested

  • Written claim stating the amount claimed
  • The bond and its endorsements
  • The contract or guaranteed obligation
  • Proof of the default: records, demands, settlements or rulings

Each insurer's claim forms are on its page, under “Documents and forms”.

How it is paid

The surety company pays the beneficiary what is due and then recovers that payment from the principal and the joint obligors, because the law subrogates it to the creditor's rights.

Watch out for

  • If you disagree with the answer, you can go to CONDUSEF or to the courts.
  • The claim interrupts the statute of limitations: the right expires after three years or the term of the guaranteed obligation, whichever is shorter.

General guide. Legal deadlines come from Mexico's Insurance Contract Law and the Insurance and Surety Institutions Law; your policy may allow more time or ask for other documents.
